Week 32

 Dear Parents and Students,

I would first like to thank all parents for taking time out of your busy schedules to come in to see me. Communication is integral to the healthy development of your children, and it is good to be able to discuss the progress of your kids, and share viewpoints of how to support and encourage the students of Grade 4.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We completed Topic 16 on Monday, and had our topic test on Wednesday, which covered units of measurement, weight, capacity, time, and temperature. We also sat our benchmark and cumulative tests this week, before beginning Topic 17, starting with a study of surveys. We will continue with Topic 17 throughout next week.

Literacy Workshop

We read a new story this week, Lou Gehrig: the Luckiest Man, which completes our theme

of heroes. We have also started a new unit in Grammar, dedicated to the use of pronouns.

We will continue with pronouns next week, along with our next writing assignment: Writing to Persuade.

Science

We have begun our final unit for the year, which is focused on Life Science. This week, we have been classifying plants and animals, and on Wednesday, we focused on flowers and all of their different parts. The week after next, we will be learning about adaptations of different plants and animals, and how such adaptations help each species to survive.

Next week, we will focus on our Science Fair projects. We will set up and practise on Monday; in-class presentations will be taking place on Wednesday, and then the big day is on Thursday!

Social Studies

We have completed our study of the American Midwest, and we spent most of this week reviewing what we have learned and preparing for our team test, which took place on Friday. Next week, we will begin preparing for our next Social Studies assignment. Each group will focus on a specific region and topic. We will then spend time researching our topic and preparing our presentations, which will be presented in a few weeks’ time.

The big news, of course, is that we have our Science Fair on Thursday. Parents are welcome to visit, and we are excited to have you along. Please observe all current protocols regarding Covid-19. We also have our May Day field trip on Friday. Please note that we will leave school at 8:30 am and will return in time for the buses to depart at the regular times.
