Week 29

 Dear Parents and Students,

We have had another eventful week, with Grades 1, 3, and 5 impressing us all with very entertaining and informative presentations for the International Expo. We all had a taste of different cultures and regions, starting in India, and then moving to Thailand, Norway, Indonesia, and Canada. Pre-K then joined the other grades to present a series of enjoyable stage performances. A big thank you goes out to all of the students, teachers, and staff for all of the hard work that was put in to create such an enjoyable morning. It was also great to see parents visiting again. For those of you who couldn’t make it to the Expo, photos can be found via the link at the bottom of this post.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We have completed Topic 15, and our test took place on Wednesday. We have already begun Topic 16, which is dedicated to measurements, time, and temperature. We have started with customary units of length, and we will continue next week with weight and capacity, before comparing it all to the metric system.

Literacy Workshop

We have continued with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland this week, and the discussions from our Reading Circles continue to inspire. We have had some very insightful contributions, and we are learning that there are many ways to interpret a text. We have a very busy week next week, as we will finish the story, and celebrate on Friday with a Mad Tea Party. We will also work towards a creative representation of our favourite part of the tale. This may come in the form of a drawing or painting, a model, a poem or song, a game, or any other creative form. In our grammar lessons, we have been appreciating the importance of commas, and we will continue with commas next week.

Science

We enjoyed more practical experiments this week as we investigated how sound waves

are created and how they travel. Our study of sound continues next week, and then after the Spring Break, we will begin to experiment with light. We have had our regular Science Fair conferences, and everyone’s projects seem to be going very well.

Social Studies

Our studies of the American Midwest continue, and we have been further developing our expository reading, note-taking, and summarizing skills. We have been learning about the early history of the Great Plains region, and we spent some time comparing historical maps dating back as early as 1803. Our study of the Midwest will continue next week.

Other important information

Our March assembly will take place next Friday, 31st March. The next day marks the beginning of Spring Break, and school will be closed until Monday, 10th April. We have one more busy week before our vacation. Have a great weekend, everybody, and I‘ll see you all on Monday!
