Week 28

 Dear Parents and Students,

Spirit Week has brought a lot of energy, and we have been very lucky with the weather. It has been so much fun to see everyone dressing up in the various themes throughout the week. Thank you to all parents who spent time and talent designing costumes, hairstyles, and even make-up! Photos taken throughout the week can be found via the link at the end of this post.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We have completed Topic 14, and our test took place on Tuesday. We have already begun Topic 15, and we have spent the last few lessons studying solid figures, including cutting out our own geometric nets and building three-dimensional shapes. This is a short topic, and the test will take place next Wednesday.

Literacy Workshop

We began reading Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland this week, and we are already five chapters in. Some of the discussions arising from our Reading Circles are quite fascinating, as everybody has their own interpretation of the story, and we are enjoying sharing one-another’s perspectives, inferences, and insights. We will continue reading the story throughout next week.

Science

Science Fair projects are beginning to take shape, as we establish our hypotheses and

finalise our planning for experimentation. Regular conferences each week will be held to

make sure everyone is on track. In the classroom, we spent time investigating different forms of energy source for everyday use. We then speculated what would be the best way to generate enough power for a small town. Next week will focus on sound energy, with another practical assignment set up for Wednesday.

Social Studies

We have begun studying America’s Midwest, beginning with its geography, and with a focus on summarising expository text. We are developing our skills in efficient skimming,

scanning, and summarising information in books and online, as we learn about the climate, resources, and physical features of the Great Lakes States and the Plains States of the USA. Next week, we will continue to practise our skills as we study the early history of the region.

Other important information

The activities continue next week, as we will enjoy the International Expo presented to us

by Grades 1, 3, and 5. The expo takes place on Thursday, and parents are welcome to join from 11:00 am. Don’t forget that on Tuesday, Grade 4 will have our portrait photos taken for the yearbook. Don’t forget to brush your hair!

We said goodbye to Arata on Monday. He has been with us since Kindergarten, so it was very sad to see him leave. He is now returning to Japan, and we wish him all the best at his new school. Good luck, Arata, and make sure you visit us if you are ever in Taiwan again!

Have a great weekend, everybody, and I‘ll see you all on Monday!
