Week 25

Dear Parents and Students

Despite another week of cold, windy weather, the Literacy Week activities have made it a very special week to remember. We have enjoyed all kinds of activities. We had our dress-up day, the Caves book sale, we also presented our Book Promotions on Wednesday and Thursday, and to cap it all off, we had visits from two authors!

In the Classroom:

Maths

We have completed Topic 13, and had our topic test on Friday. Next week, we will begin Topic 14, which is a change of pace, as it is dedicated to the study of perimeter and area.

Literacy Workshop

Much of our week was dedicated to our Book Promotion project, with our presentations taking place on Thursday and Friday. Next week, we begin our next writing project, Writing Instructions. We will also begin a new unit in Grammar, this time dedicated to capitalisation and punctuation. We will continue with this unit for the next few weeks.

Science

Our experimentation with electricity has come to an end for the time being, and we have been reviewing all we have learned. Next week, we will turn our attention to thermal energy, with another practical assignment set up for Wednesday. We will also be discussing our preliminary research for our Science Fair projects during the week.

Social Studies

As part of our Literacy Week activities, we read about Anyokah, a six-year-old Native American girl. Along with her father, Sequoya, she created an alphabet for her native Cherokee language. We also earned to read a map scale, and we have begun reading about and discussing the Gulf Coast States. These have proven to be significantly different to the Northeast States in many ways, and we have been comparing and contrasting the different regions. Next week, we will be making further comparisons as we learn about the inland states of the region. We will then review the entire unit ahead of the open book test that will take place on March 9.
