Week 17

 Dear Parents and Students,

At the time of writing this post, we are all eagerly anticipating this evening’s performances. Congratulations to all students on your hard work in rehearsals, and thanks to parents and family for assisting in providing costumes. I look forward to seeing you all this evening.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We have continued with Topic 9 this week, and we are investigating the names and properties of angles and polygons, including the various types of triangles and quadrilaterals. We are also learning how to measure and create angles using a protractor. We will review the lesson on Monday, and our topic test will take place on Tuesday.

Literacy Workshop

We have started a new grammar unit dedicated to adjectives. We have also begun drafting our own alternative fairy tales, inspired by Cendrillon, the Caribbean version of Cinderella. We will publish these next week, and enjoy reading them as part of our publishing party/winter celebrations.

Science

We continued our study of energy, motion, and inertia this week by extending our model roller coasters and observing how energy can be stored as height. We related our findings to what we have discovered over the past two weeks, and we will further review what we have learned on Monday.

Social Studies

We have been reading about and discussing the American Northeast. We are currently investigating how the region has changed since European settlement through to today, and how the Industrial Revolution affected life in the region. We will review the chapter next week, and then after the break, we will focus on what the region is like today, and

how it compares with other parts of the world.

Other important information

Next Tuesday, we will have a Christmas/winter party in the classroom to celebrate the end of the year and winter vacation. Students are welcome to bring snacks to share, although this is not an obligation.

As you know, on Wednesday, students will be dismissed between 1:00-1:10 pm. The departure schedule is below. I hope everyone enjoys the winter break, and I wish you all safe journeys if you are traveling. We still have two and a half days to go before our vacation, though, so students, I’ll see you all on Monday!
