Week 12

 Dear Parents and Students,

We’ve had a short, but very busy week, beginning with a very successful Halloween/Dress up day on Monday. Thank you to all parents for your time and effort in helping your children with costumes. It is unfortunate that you were not able to come along and join in the fun, but you will find a link to photos of the day at the end of this post. Thanks also goes to the office staff for arranging the trick-or-treat, and Grade 6 for their amazing haunted house.  It should be noted that the Grade 4 performance was entirely designed and arranged by the Grade 4 students. Well done, Grade 4, on an original and entertaining performance!

In the Classroom:

Maths

We began Topic 7 this week. This is another short topic that reviews and extends what we know about multiplication. We will complete the topic next week, with the topic test to take place next Friday.

Literacy Workshop

We had our usual spelling test this week, but we have spent most of our

time planning and drafting our Narrative Stories. We will spend all of next working on our stories, and we will present published versions of our narratives at our publishing party next Friday, 11th November.

Science

We have finally completed our mystery surrounding the Ashfall Fossil Beds in Nebraska, and we have begun to review what we know about slow and rapid surface changes. We will continue our review next week, with a unit test set to take place the following week. Permission forms for our field trip to the Taichung Earthquake Museum were sent home Wednesday. As mentioned in the form, the field trip is part of our Earth Science unit, where we will see, first hand, the devastating effects of a major earthquake, and what modern technology can do to minimise the danger of future quakes.

Social Studies

After spending most of last week focused on our presentations, we have now returned to learning about economics. Using the USA as a model, we have been investigating the various industries that make up a nation’s economy, and how it may be affected by elements such as supply and demand. Next week, we will spend a lesson reviewing Chapter 2, and we will have a minor test on Tuesday.

Other important information

Forms were sent home Tuesday to arrange parent/teacher interviews for the week beginning Monday, 14th November. If you haven’t done so already, please complete the form and return it as soon as possible. Please also try to list a number of available times in order of preference. I will do my best to accommodate everybody. Parents, I look forward to meeting you all then! In the meantime, have a restful long weekend, and students, I’ll see you all again on Monday.
