Dear Parents and Students,
After our long weekend, we have wasted no time in getting back into our classroom
routines. As usual, we have been very busy in Grade 4, and we have packed a great deal into the past three days.
In the Classroom:
Maths
We began Topic 5 this week, which has been mostly a review of multiplication. We will
continue our studies next week, including using expanded algorithms, before reviewing the topic. The topic test will take place next Friday.
Literacy Workshop
Our Reading Comprehension lessons were dedicated to mysteries this week, and we enjoyed trying to solve cases in the stories we were reading. We were also treated to another grammar lesson by Ms Wu, who had us all converting our nouns from the previous lesson into plural possessive nouns. Next week, we will return to our Reading Circles with our next story, Tanya’s Reunion.
Science
We continued our investigations of surface changes this week, including a practical lab
assignment in which we modelled and observed the effects of weathering on mountains
and rocks. Once again, we applied our conclusions to our investigation into the Ashfall
Fossil Beds. Next week, we will explore how environments on Earth have changed over time.
Social Studies
We have continued with preparing for our upcoming minor presentation assignment about patriotism, and we have a great selection of nations represented. We will continue to prepare next week, ahead of the presentations on Tuesday and Thursday, 25th and 27th October. We have also spent some time learning about cultural diversity from our textbooks.
Other important information
MAP testing begins next week, beginning with Math on Monday. Please see the full schedule on the post below this one. There is no way to effectively study for these tests, but the best preparation is to rest well, get to bed at a reasonable time, and to eat a healthy breakfast and morning snack each day.
In the meantime, I hope everyone enjoys the weekend, and I will see everyone back at school on Monday!
Dates to remember:
Mon. Oct. 17: MAP testing begins
Fri. Oct. 21: Math test - Topic 5
Mon. Oct. 31: Halloween activities
