Week 7

 Dear Parents and Students,

We have enjoyed an eventful week, with our Global Awareness week activities taking place throughout the week, a birthday party, and our September assembly to lead us into the weekend.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We have spent the week working through Topic 4, which is dedicated to division. We have compared different methods and strategies used to divide, and acknowledged the properties of division, such as dividing by one, dividing a number by itself, and dividing zero by another number. We will review the topic on Monday, and the topic test will take place Tuesday.

Literacy Workshop

We spent the first part of the week reading Return to The Titanic. This was an interesting book that told two stories at once. One story was about the experiences of a survivor of the infamous tragedy, and the other was about the mission to find the wreck of the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean. We paid particular attention to the writer’s craft, and how each new chapter was introduced in a way that immediately engages the reader.  Next week, we will begin our next story, Tomas and the Library Lady. Our grammar lessons this week have focussed on nouns, including a very enjoyable and engaging lesson with Ms Wu, who had everyone listing dozens of nouns in singular form, and then accurately spelling the plurals, including irregular nouns.

Science

We had fun this week as we tried to build model volcanoes from different consistencies of (pretend) lava. We used our experiments to determine why some volcanoes are cone-shaped, while others are

shaped like a shield. We also worked out why some volcanoes explode, while others are

comparatively gentle. We have applied our findings to our investigation into the Ashfall  Fossil Beds in Nebraska, and we will continue our investigations next week.

Social Studies

We took a break from our regular Social Studies topics this week as we turned our attention to Global Awareness Week.  The Global Goal in focus this year is Global Goal Number 4: Quality Education. We spent the first part of the week discussing education, and what makes memorable and valuable lessons. We then learned about and discussed the inequalities of access to quality education around the world.  Finally, we reflected on all we had learned and discussed, and designed our very own lesson plans that we plan to put into practice later in the semester. Next week, we will return to our regular studies, with a new chapter dedicated to citizenship.

I hope you all have a restful weekend, and I will see everyone on Monday!
