Week 4

Dear Parents and Students,

Although only four days long, another busy and productive week has flown by, and we are all becoming more industrious as we become more comfortable and used to our routines. Tomorrow marks the beginning of a three-day weekend, and I’m sure everyone will appreciate the extra day to relax and recharge ahead of next week. After reading this post, please check the previous posts for the Parent's Introductory Slideshow, and the Grade 4 Curriculum Summaries.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We have completed our second topic of Maths, and we will hold a topic test on Tuesday. Topic 2 was all about adding and subtracting whole numbers. There is no homework set for the weekend, but links to resources may be found in the posts below this one for anyone who would like to review subtraction further.  Next Thursday, we will begin Topic 3, which focuses on multiplication.

Literacy Workshop

In Reading this week, we followed our theme of Journeys, this time following the journey of Akiak, the determined member of a sledding team in Alaska’s Iditarod race. We will be thinking about the various journeys and stories we have been reading about as we prepare for our first major writing assignment. On Monday, we will begin planning our Personal Narrative stories, and we will spend the best part of the next two weeks drafting, writing, and publishing our work.

Science

We have continued with our practical research experiments this week, and we have all but completed Part 1 of the Skills Handbook. Next week, we will begin our next unit, which is dedicated to Earth Science.

Social Studies

We have been studying the various climates of the USA, and how they compare to other places around the world. We have also learned how location, elevation, and landforms can affect climate. Next week, we will be focusing on natural resources.

Other important information

As we have no Parent/Teacher Introductory Evening this year, Teacher Introductory Presentations and Curriculum pdf files are being emailed to all classes today. After viewing these you may have questions; we would also like parents and teachers to have the opportunity to get to know each other. To help with this and to avoid face-to-face meetings during the current surge, there will be two parent/teacher on-line sessions from 7.00 -7.45 pm on Tuesday, September 13th and Thursday, September 15th. I will be setting up Google Meet meetings for these times. Please check your emails on these days for invitations.  These will also be published on the blog and Class Dojo. We very much hope that all parents will be able to join in on one of these evenings.  If there are any further questions you prefer to mention privately, you are welcome to make another specific appointment. If you wish to speak to one of the specialty teachers, please call the office to make an appointment.

I hope you all enjoy the long weekend, and I will see you all on Monday!
